2015-16 "Styles For Grades" Program

The program is open to all Richmond City, Henrico County and Chesterfield County public and private school students, grades K-12 who make Honor or Scholar Roll for the quarter; must receive letter grades A-F. Home schooled students ARE NOT eligible for participation. Male/female students are eligible for discounts on hairstyles, braids, or haircuts, not exceeding the value of the service and up to $25.00. Each student is eligible for one discount per quarter. It is non-transferable and cannot be combined with any other discounts (Weekly Specials, holiday discounts or business/association discounts) and is not valid towards mobile or appointment fees. Each student MUST present their report card for validity. A certificate printed by the school is not acceptable without the current report card.

For the quarterly discount, the discount must be used in one service. If the total value is not used with that service, the remaining value is void. The value does not roll over like the Presidential Program. There are specific expiration dates for each quarter.

Discounts are as follows (value must not exceed $25):

$5 per A

$3 per B

$1 per C

At the end of the school year, any student who has maintained Honor/Scholar Roll for all 4 quarters is eligible to receive a $50 credit (Presidential Program). The "Presidential Program" credit will be given instead of the 4th quarter discount for eligible students. This credit will not have to be used in one appointment like the quarterly discount. It will present like an e-gift certificate. MUST present final report card. In order to be eligible for the Presidential Program, the initial redemption must be made between 6/27/16 - 8/17/16. If the initial service is not completed by the deadline, the student will lose the entire value of the certificate.

I'm excited to announce the return of my Styles For Grades and Presidential Programs. They were both established in 2009 to reward academic excellence for students in grades K-12 in the Hampton Roads, VA area, where I resided for 10 years. I wanted to do something to reward students for achieving Honor and Scholar Roll during the school year, in hopes that they would be encouraged to continue getting good grades. I became a partner in education with many area schools and was featured on WTKR (Hampton Roads) News Channel 3's "People Taking Action" segment in January 2011. 

Honor and scholar roll recipients receive free or discounted services for quarterly submissions of their report cards. Students who maintain honor and/or scholar roll for all 4 quarters receive a reusable e-gift code at the end of the school year - these are my Presidential Program participants. I also participate in back to school, homecoming, prom, graduation and other events throughout the school year. 

Last year, we moved from the Hampton Roads area back to my hometown in Richmond, VA. It was a difficult transition with the move and with the change from being in a centralized salon to a full time mobile stylist. I made the decision to put the program on hold last school year. Now that the new school year is under way, it is the perfect time to relaunch and expand the program for K-12 students in Richmond City, Henrico County AND Chesterfield County school districts!

Since I started the program in 2009, I have been using all of my tips and a small percentage of my earnings to purchase the necessary supplies for participants in the program. I started with about 60 participants in 2009 and had grown to about 280 participants in 2012, and I anticipate more students will participate with the expansion to the 3 school districts. Please consider donating to the program. I am working with a new distributor and could get my hair for loc extensions at a lower price. There is still a 3 business day order requirement because he will be shipping to me versus me having to drive to Virginia Beach, so please be mindful of that when ordering.  I know that loc extensions are an investment and I wanted to help reduce the expense a little so I searched until I could find a better contract. Hampton Roads' Worth the Wait 3 Youth Conference (WTW3) is back - bigger and better than ever! 

Join us for the dynamic conference kick-off on Thursday, July 18th through Saturday, July 20th at I.C. Norcom High School, located at 1801 London Blvd., in Portsmouth. In addition, a special Promise Ceremony* will be held on Sunday, at 11:15 a.m. at Grove Church during its worship service. Youth - middle school to high school - are invited to attend this three-day conference that has been created just for them. Our special guest - national recording artist and host of Sunday Best, Kirk Franklin - will be on hand to 'keep it real' with youth, as he shares his poignant testimony with them and answers their questions - no holds barred! There will also be XTREEM GAMES - rock climbing, bull riding and gamer bus-along with a concert featuring crowd-favorite Canton Jones and Phoenix. And, best of all...the cost is only $35 per child (early bird registration until June 16th and $50 after, per child). This price includes EVERYTHING...meals, concert, fun and games! Why are we doing this? Because our youth are WORTH IT! The goal of the conference is to help youth understand their value or worth and to realize that God loves them - while helping them make better life choices. "I Am Not My Hair" Forum

On February 23, 2012, by invitation from Ms. Lovely Edwards and Virginia Wesleyan College's International and Intercultural Department, myself and 2 other natural hair care specialists sat on a panel to discuss natural hair care. It was quite enlightening to see so many ladies and gentlemen interested in the proper care for the natural hair. There were so many questions and misconceptions regarding the care of hair. I appreciate the interaction with the students.


The panel gave me a better insight to what people think of natural hair care. It has always come somewhat as a second nature to do what's best for healthy hair but unfortunately, there are so many people who don't know where to start, where to get the information and how to go about deciding what works best for them. I was left with the most cliche but accurate thought of the evening.

Virginia Wesleyan College's Office of International and Intercultural Programs is hosting a I Am NOT  My Hair Forum for African American Heritage Month. The forum will consist of panel discussions about natural hair care, products and styles along with clip viewings of Chris Rock's "Good Hair" and India Arie's "I am Not my Hair video."

Protective styles are important during transition but they can also be fun and cute. Straw sets offer a versatile look, fun and flirty look. While a straw set can be done on natural or relaxed hair, when in transition a straw set is often used to cover the different lines of demarcation that you often see during transition (new growth, relaxed hair, and ends). The style is low maintenance and can be worn untwisted, twisted out, or both, to stretch the style. Straw sets will last a couple of weeks, with proper maintenance and do not use heat to set.

The hair can be washed, worn up or down and human hair braids can even be styled and changed from straight to curly. Most importantly, the hair is protected from root to end.

12/5/11 - FREE Hair Trim (Appointment ONLY)


It is very important to keep your ends moisturized and trimmed on an average of every 6-8 weeks. Naturals who are in transition may need them trimmed more frequently, based on the condition of your ends. Trimming split or dead ends is imperative to the healthy growth of your hair. When you have split ends, they will split up the shaft of the hair and stop the growth process, leading to breakage.

2011-12 "Styles For Grades" and "Presidential Program" to Resume in November 2011

Allow your child's report card to gain them savings toward beauty and style. PLEASE check availability and book online at http://stylesbysheba.genbook.com or call for availability. See terms for the program below.


The program is open to all Hampton Roads public and private school students grades K-12 who make Honor or Scholar Roll for this quarter; must receive letter grades A-E. Home schooled students ARE NOT eligible for participation. Male/female students are eligible for discounts on hairstyles, braids, or haircuts, not exceeding the value of the service and up to $25.00. Each student is eligible for one discount per quarter. It is non-transferrable and cannot be combined with any other discounts (Weekly Specials, special holiday discounts or business/association discounts) and is not valid towards mobile or appointment fees. Each student MUST bring their report card for validity. A certificate printed by the school is not acceptable without the current report card.

For the quarterly discount, the discount must be used in one service. If the total value is not used with that service, the remaining value is void. The value does not roll over like the Presidential Program. There are specific expiration dates for each quarter.

Discounts are as follows:

$5 per A
$4 per B
$3 per C

At the end of the school year, any student who has maintained Honor/Scholar Roll for all 4 quarters is eligible to receive a $50 credit (Presidential Program). The "Presidential Program" credit will be given instead of the 4th quarter discount for eligible students. This credit will not have to be used in one appointment like the quarterly discount. It will present like a gift certificate. MUST bring in final report card. In order to be eligible for the Presidential Program, the initial redemption must be made between 6/16/12 - 8/25/12. If the initial service is not completed by the deadline, the student will lose the entire value of the certificate.

Holiday Season Is Upon Us

As the season changes, I begin to make plans for the holiday season. I try to get my shopping done early, write out gift lists, and take care of my loyal customers. NAACP Norfolk Youth Community Service Award

The NAACP Norfolk Branch Youth and Young Adult Division is accepting applications from adults of youth that strives to make an impact within their respective neighborhoods through community service.  The winners will be honored at the Community Awards Breakfast on Saturday, October 22, 2011, Norview Community Center, 10am  (Donation:  Adults - $12    Youth (up to age 17) - $3. See flyer here.
